Sanford and his brother Whiskey are sitting in the kitchen, Whiskey strategically planted in the doorway, and both of them so rescue-Mom has no choice but to look into those hypnotizing eyes when she arrives... There's no telling who will be more excited first to see her, ready for the snacks and walk!

Sanford Chillin', 1 of 2 Doggie-Paintings, Pastel & Copic on Canvas

"...so the doggie-brothers could really shine..."
I first painted Sanford from pics his Rescue-Momma sent me, of just him and then another portrait of him and his sis Herschie. This portrait is one of a two canvas pet portrait, where in the picture she sent, Sanford is sitting further away than Whiskey, in the next room, and Whiskey is totally blocking the doorway like a little furry imp.
One of the things I really loved about this painting was the collector wanted really bright colors in the background, to brighten up their space. And they really liked me amping up the colors of what mainly already existed in the photos, and choosing to leave out whatever was necessary so that the stars of the portraits, Sanford pictured above, and his bro Whiskey, could really shine.
Art supplies I used to paint "Sanford Chillin'"
I painted this pet portrait of "Sanford Chillin'" on stretched canvas, first starting out with pencil studies and then finishing those layers with my Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils and CretaColor Aqua Monolith to capture as much of the soft impressions of the space. That was important because in the composition, two paintings had to hang on the wall and convey that they were in adjoining rooms, which was part of the original photo, and, to me, a major part of the "feel" I wanted to capture.
I finished the painting with my Caran 'd'ache Aqua Pastels, mixing them in various layers, and adding transparent layers of color midtones and highlights with Prismacolor and Copic Alcohol inks.
