Sanford and Herschie the rescue puppies lay huddled next to each other, eagerly awaiting their rescue-momma's arrival from work, ready to jump up and surprise her with all sorts of shakes and jumps and wiggles from the day.....

"Look Who Arrived," Alcohol Ink Portrait of Sanford & Herschie

"...waiting eagerly for Momma..."

Sanford and Herschie's pic was sent to me by their Rescue-Momma during the lockdown, after we met while their gang was out on a neighborhood dog walk. When I saw these two's expressions, I loved how they both seemed to say so much in their seemingly stoich faces. When you've met a dog and been around them, pictures then suddenly say so much more about their emotions and moods.

And this pic gave me the feeling they were waiting eagerly for Momma to arrive, with maybe just a little bit of expectation she would have been sooner! But, knowing her, I'm certain both Sanford and Herschie were treated with a wonderful walk and plenty of delicious treats!

What I used to paint "Look Who Arrived"

This doggie-family portrait was my first request during the lockdown, and supplie were sparse around town, that was, if the store was even open. So I decided to use some masonite that I had in the garage. I cut it to size, sanded the surface, and then gave it several layers of oil-based primer to fully seal and size the surface for painting.

"Look Who Arrived" then became my first piece where I experimented blending Caran d'ache water soluble pastels with Copic and Prismacolor markers, intermixing the layers with fixative, letting those layers dry, then adding more layers of pastel, copic or prismacolor marker, and various alcohol inks and washes.
